The debate concerning the word "Zionist...Severina,

The debate concerning the word "Zionist" reminds me of the debate concerning the word "God." Talk about a term that has taken on unfortunate connotations!

I, for one, prefer to read these types of terms broadly enough to accommodate their holy meanings, rather than to scrap them because they have other meanings that I decry. By maintaining the broad interpretations, we can communicate with a wider range of people and keep a more positive outlook on the domain we're discussing (whether it's politics or spirituality). The key is to be willing to call Bullshit on the interpretations that are counter-productive, rather than simply ignoring them.

Perhaps I would agree with you if there were enough of a movement to employ different terms that retained the best of the earlier terms but without the baggage. Not being aware of such a movement, I still with the old terms ... but merely emphasize some meanings over others.Daniel Spirohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09656412977046134771noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32924329.post-56753510676881599262009-05-23T06:00:03.936-07:002009-05-23T06:00:03.936-07:00The term "zionist" has these days even worse conno...The term "zionist" has these days even worse connotations than "liberal." I met an Israeli who would not even acknowledge that he'd ever heard the term. Maybe it's time to invent a new term for a new age.

CenerentolaMarta Steelehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01478787421473265309noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32924329.post-86820964574680168562009-05-22T04:13:55.708-07:002009-05-22T04:13:55.708-07:00It's good to hear from you again, Betty.

I usually don't utilize any kind of technological idea until at least three or four years AFTER everyone else does.

Take care.

DDaniel Spirohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09656412977046134771noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32924329.post-42505627604714721162009-05-21T11:59:54.038-07:002009-05-21T11:59:54.038-07:00This is really just to say hi.I've been tweeting m...This is really just to say hi.I've been tweeting more than blogging lately, but you are still on my Google Reader!

I do plan to read your books this summer in the PNW.

I just realized the second sentence in this comment would have been totally incomprehensible 10 years ago...Betty Carlsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17155852272383173880noreply@blogger.com
